10 Old Social Media Platforms That Faded Away

Remember the excitement when you edited your Top 8 in Myspace? Do you remember when you received a new scrap on Orkut? Social media is ever evolving. Behind each TikTok or Instagram is a very long list of old social media sites that dominated our lives (and screens) and faded away gradually.

Today, we are going to take a nostalgic walk through the digital memory lane and remind ourselves about 10 old social media platforms that passed away over time. Did you ever ask yourself, ‘when did Myspace shut down?’ Or what happened to the computer playgrounds you knew when you were young? Well you have come to the right place.

It is time to shake off these digital cobwebs and take a trip back in time to the sites that led to the emergence of the current social media giants.

1.Myspace

There is no way that one can ever have a list of old social media sites without mentioning Myspace. It was opened in 2003, and would have been the coolest hangout place in town to any music lover, wannabe artist and anyone who wanted to flex their HTML muscles. Myspace had customizable profiles, music playlists and the notorious Top 8.

When did Myspace shut down then? The reply is not simple. Myspace has not technically closed down but now it is just a shadow of its past, what used to be. Myspace was at its peak in the mid 2000s, but after being purchased by News Corp, it suffered in terms of cluttered interface, slow response and fierce competition with Facebook.

By 2022, Myspace had not only lost millions of users but also sold off at a fraction of the price it was purchased. A server migration in 2019 deleted years of content created by users and in 2024, Myspace, the site, had become ready-only with non-functional media players and little activity.

Hence, technically Myspace is still in existence, but its heydays are long gone.

2.MSN Messenger

MSN Messenger

Windows Live Messenger (previously MSN Messenger) became the most popular instant chat or messaging app among an entire generation. It was introduced in 1999 and you could use it to chat, exchange emoticons and even nudge the window of your friends. MSN Messenger was not a chat tool, but a social life line.

However, when smartphones and new messaging apps started becoming the new fad, MSN Messenger was no longer popular. In 2013, Microsoft officially retired the service and merged it with Skype. It is still considered the gold standard of old social media platforms by many people to this day.

3.Orkut

Orkut

Orkut was Google’s initial venture into social media networking. It was launched in 2004 and immediately became a sensation in such countries like India and Brazil. Orkut had a cutting-edge feature that had communities, forums and scrapbooks. It was a fun alternative to leaving messages to friends.

However, it was not the U.S. where Orkut was able to gain traction and soon it was overtaken by Facebook. In 2014, Google shut down Orkut, leaving millions of nostalgic users behind. To this day, Orkut remains one of the most popular old social media platforms to those who have grown up with it.

4.Friendster

Friendster

If you were an active internet user in the 2000s, you are likely to remember Friendster as it used to be quite popular during that time. It was a site devoted to friend-of-friends and prospective love interests. Friendster was released in 2002 and was popular, particularly in Asia, with over 115 million users at its peak.

But it failed to take off due to constant technical issues and failure to keep pace with its rivals. Friendster was later relegated into obscurity and finally shut down in 2015, although it made several attempts at reinventing itself through games and added features. This is a classic case from the list of old social media sites that failed to change and adapt quickly.

5.BBM (Blackberry Messenger)

BBM (Blackberry Messenger)

BBM was the social network of the late 2000s, at least to the owners of a BlackBerry. It was introduced in 2005 and it provided secure messaging, voice calls and the famous BBM pin. It was popular with both business users and teens with more than 43 million users at its peak.

The problem was that BBM was only available on BlackBerry phones and could not keep up as smartphones evolved. BBM later expanded to the iOS and Android platforms but failed to regain its previous success. The service was formally closed in 2019 and became one major name on the list of old social media sites that were unable to keep up with the smartphone revolution.

6.Bebo

Bebo

In the mid 2000s, particularly in the UK and Ireland, Bebo was the new kid on the block. It enabled its users to create profiles, share photos and connect with friends. Bebo was popular for its playful skins and quizzes and was therefore popular with the teens.

The problem was that Bebo was not able to rival Facebook and Twitter, even though it was popular. And then with a few re-launching efforts and change in ownership, Bebo remained forgotten in the digital world never to be relaunched. By 2023, the Bebo.com domain redirects to a different service, which marks an end to its era.

7.DailyBooth

DailyBooth

DailyBooth can be considered a predecessor of Instagram. It was a platform where people shared selfies and snapshots daily. DailyBooth was launched in 2009, and it gained popularity and traction within a very short time, even attracting celebrity users. It enabled its users to comment on their own pictures and connect to their followers, which makes it a precursor of the current visual-focused social media.

But the emergence of Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat meant the end of DailyBooth. It did not survive the competition of its rivals and closed in 2012. But it definitely left its mark as one of the most innovative old social media platforms.

8.Google Buzz

Google Buzz

Google Buzz was an attempt by Google to combine social networking and email. It was introduced in 2010, and it enabled its users to share links, photos and updates through Gmail. However, Buzz had privacy problems, and never became very popular, despite the convenience.

In 2011, Google retired Buzz in favor of other projects like Google+. That left Buzz just another footnote in the list of old social media sites that flickered before fading away.

9.Vine

Vine

The viral 6-second video was born on Vine. Vine became a cultural phenomenon, spawning innumerable memes, trends and internet celebrities. It was launched in 2012 and acquired by Twitter. It had looping videos, which were infinitely creative and addictive.

However, the rise of Instagram and Snapchat, and Twitter’s lack of support, sealed its fate. Vine was officially shut down in January 2017. Nonetheless, its legacy can be found in the short-form video apps of today and it is nostalgically remembered among the old social media platforms.

10.ICQ

ICQ

ICQ was one of the original instant messaging app services. It was launched nearly three decades ago in 1996. ICQ was the first to expose millions of people to the idea of online chatting with their own unique user numbers and customizable avatars. ICQ was the first to set the stage for MSN Messenger and other chat platforms.

However, due to the emergence of other messaging services, ICQ lost its appeal. Although technically, it still exists, it is a dinosaur of the past. ICQ is another addition to the list of old social media sites that has defined today’s digital era.

Conclusion

As we scroll through today’s polished feeds and endlessly looped reels, it’s easy to forget the quirky, charming world that came before. These old social media platforms may now be ghosts of the internet past, but they laid the foundation for how we connect, share, and express ourselves today. Whether it was customizing your Myspace layout, waiting for a BBM ping, or dropping a scrap on Orkut, each platform held a piece of our digital youth. Though they’ve faded from our screens, their impact lives on—in the apps we use now, and in the memories we didn’t know we still had.
