Saudi National Day: Holiday, History, Theme, and Events

Every year millions of Saudis line up on the streets, and fireworks light up the sky on 23^rd September in Saudi Arabia. According to ministry of foreign affairs Saudi Arabia, this day commemorates the unification of the Kingdoms of Najd and Hijaz by King Abdulaziz in 1932.

Saudi Arabia National Day was announced as a public holiday by King Abdullah in 2005, which meant that schools and all offices will remain closed. The day was first officially celebrated in 2015 and since then the celebrations have grown exponentially.

94th Saudi National Day 2024 is coming up on Monday, September 23! This year, the Kingdom will have a Friday-Saturday weekend, and many employees will also get Sunday, September 22 off. That means you can enjoy an extended and festive holiday weekend to celebrate this special day!

History Of Saudi National Day:

Till 1932, Saudi Arabia was nowhere to be seen on the World map and numerous tribes were scattered in the region. However, thanks to his majesty, King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, who fought for 32 years, after he recovered the city of Riyadh in 1902 and declared the unification of all parts of the Kingdom under the name of Saudi Arabia on September 23^rd 1932/ 1351 AH. By unifying the Kingdom, he gave the people of Saudi Arabia a national identity, unified by a shared culture and history. And that event still continues to shape the identity of the Saudis and their national ambitions.

Theme For Saudi National Day 2024:

Turki Al-Shaikh, chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Entertainment authority has announced the theme “We Dream and We Achieve”, the theme ties in with Saudi Vision 2030 and how the Kingdom is filled with ambition. The new design includes a man and a woman in the middle, and symbols of different projects across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. There are multiple projects featured in the design that the Saudi Government is working on, these projects include the Diriyah Gate Project, the al-Subaiba Solar Power Plant Project, the AlUla Development Project, the Kingdom’s Astronaut Program, The Cube Project, the Electric Car (CEER) Project, THE LINE Project, the Sindalah Project, the AlSoudah Development Project, the King Salman Park Project, and the Sports Boulevard Project.

List of Events on 94th Saudi Arabia National Day in 2024:

1. Fireworks display:
   The whole sky will be light up with bright colors creating a wonderful and relaxing festive atmosphere.
2. Musical and Heritage Performances:
   No modern-day Saudi National Day celebration is complete without songs. The four songs to celebrate the occasion are Above the Clouds, My Home Is Here, Our Date 2030 and yes.
3. Entertainment festivals:
   Long holidays cannot be enjoyed without any entertainment, therefore multiple entertainment festivals will be organized in parks, malls, cultural centers for whole family.
4. TV and Radio programs:
   Multiple TV and radio programs focusing on the Kingdom’s history and achievements will be on air.
5. National Dress:
   Citizens will wear traditional costumes, and cars, streets and buildings will be decorated with Saudi flags to show their love with their beloved Kingdom.
6. School events:
   Multiple activities will be conducted for the students to enjoy and understand the importance of this day and appreciate their cultural heritage.
